{diy} school spirit canvas
To contact us Click HERE
As many of you know, I am a recent graduate of Florida State University.

With graduation comes happy tears, anxious tears, and "OMG, when am I going to see you again" tears.
Another thing that comes with it is an indescribable love for your university.
Something about sitting through that entire four hour graduation ceremony makes you realize how lucky you were to attend a school so beautiful and well-respected.

I am a proud alum, and will continue to be so for the rest of my life.
With proud alum status comes ideas for CRAFTS, of course! One craft that kept popping up in my head was to paint a garnet & gold striped canvas, and then stencil on the FSU logo. I would not let this idea go.
I had everything I needed in my handy-dandy craft basket,(which is filled to the brim with everything you can imagine from my sorority crafting days)so I decided to just do it already!
As usual, the end effect was not quite what I envisioned in my head, but I still love the way it turned out!
School Spirit Canvas:
What you'll need:
First, tape up your canvas with painter's tape. I wanted to have my stripes be of varying sizes, so I just kind of eye-balled it. If you want your stripes to be more exact, then use a ruler! Next, paint your canvas. You will have to let the paint dry and paint over it a few times to create a deep color.
**As you can see, my paint somehow got underneath the tape, creating jagged lines. You can check out this great tutorial for tips on how not to do this (and how to create a chevron pattern!) I actually ended up really liking the unfinished look that the jagged lines gave my canvas, but I know it is not for everyone!**

Next, create your stencil. Click here for my original tutorial on how to create a stencil using a computer screen, a pencil, and tissue paper. After you create your stencil, lay the tissue paper down on your COMPLETELY DRY canvas. Make sure the paint is the color you want it by now!
Using a permanent marker, copy your stencil onto your canvas. I would suggest using a sharpie the color of whatever you want your stenciled picture to be.

Lastly, paint in your stencil very carefully & add text if you would like.

Andddd viola, you are done!
I know this canvas is not perfect (look at that first 2!), but it is my first attempt at "painting." :)
I can already think of a few more ideas for a canvas painting like this. You could paint it your sorority's colors & letters. Or paint the stripes light grey and then stencil on a cute monogram?
What do you think? Is this project getting your crafty brain going?
PS. I added a new "love" tab that I am very excited about. I created my own graphic page!
PPS. How is today the LAST day in May?! We are one day away from being halfway through 2012 people!
PPPS. I just downloaded The Lucky One onto my Kindle.Have you read it? I'm so excited to start it riiiight... now. Promise!

We are halfway through 2012 already! I cannot believe it.

2012 has taught me a lot so far.
January was for new beginnings.
February was for sisterhood retreats and social events.
March was for celebrations & disappointments.
April was for the end of 21 and last college activities.
May was for graduating & scary future talks.
June will be filled with summer camp & discovery.
I can't wait to see what the next 6 months brings. :)
Have a great weekend!

Sometimes you just really need a cupcake and a cookie.
Hello beautifuls.

These bad boys came to be after getting home from sushi night while watching Bridesmaids with my roomie.
Girls night much!?
I am not even going to take credit for these beautiful cupcakes whatsoever. All I did was smoosh some cookie dough down into the cupcake liners before my roommate poured some of her homemade batter into them. I also let her frost. She is the cupcake master!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Bottomed Vanilla Cupcakes:
Recipe by: How Sweet It Is
Cookie Layer Ingredients:
- One tub of refrigerated cookie dough - we cheated. :)
- If you want to make some homemade dough check out Jessica's recipe.
Cookie Layer Directions: 1. Line a muffin tin with liners and give each a quick spritz of non-stick spray. Using a spoon also sprayed with non-stick spray, press about 1 1/2 tablespoons of cookie dough into the bottom of each liner.
Cake Layer Ingredients:- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup white sugar
- 2 whole eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/3 cup milk
Cake Layer Directions:1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.2. Cream butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until combined.3. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Add half of the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Add the milk. Once mixed, add remaining dry ingredients. Using an ice cream scoop, drop batter on top of cookie dough mixture. Bake cupcakes at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes.4. After letting cool completely, frost your cupcakes with this frosting recipe. The best way to frost cupcakes without a piping bag is to scoop all of your frosting into a ziploc bag. Zip bag up tight, pushing out all air. Next, cut a small area of the bottom corner of the bag. Pipe your frosting beautifully! :)
Go into sweets coma forever.Enjoy!

{recipe} egg-white omelet
To contact us Click HERE

I am probably the least picky eater you will ever meet. However, I hate two things in this world.
Cottage cheese & plain eggs.
The cottage cheese thing is for obvious reasons.Who ever thought it was a good idea to create a substancethat looks like chunky yogurt but tastes like salt?I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND!
On the other hand, I have always had a love/hate relationship with eggs.I had a bad hard-boiled egg once and have never been able to eatthem plain ever again. Scrambled eggs? Nope. Over-easy? No thank you.Hard-boiled? Do not make me feel queasy.
I do really enjoy quiche and egg-white omelets, but only when I am in the mood.I guess I can only eat eggs junked up with veggies (and lots and lots of cheese).
In the pursuit of healthier breakfast eating than just straight carbs,(I'm looking at you cereal, toast, and grits!)I decided to try to make my own egg-whites omelet. My first attempt failed miserably.
That's right... I pretty much have no idea how to cook eggs.I can cook for hours in preparation for a party, and preparea pork tenderloin, but I am completely hopeless in the kitchenwhen it comes to breakfast food. Whew. Confession time!
I found a base-recipe on Reader's Digest's website & realized how wrong I was doing everything. I am so glad that they finally were able to teach me the waysof omelet making. I liked this omelet so much that I didn't even have to smother it in ketchup like I always do with whole-egg omelets.
I can finally make a breakfast that is healthy & easy that does not involve yogurt or oatmeal.
Winning.
Egg-White Omelet:Recipe adapted from Reader's Digest.
Ingredients:* 3 large egg whites -or 9 tablespoons if using packaged egg whites, like Egg Beaters.* 1 teaspoon water* 1/8 teaspoon salt* 1/8 teaspoon fresh ground pepper* 2 sweet baby peppers, seeds removed & diced* 1 tablespoon onion, diced* 2 slices canadian bacon, diced* 2 tablespoons shredded low-fat cheddar cheese* cooking spray
Directions:1. Whisk egg whites, water, salt, and pepper together until frothy. Toss veggies, canadian bacon, and cheese together in a bowl and set aside.2. Lightly spray small skillet with cooking spray. Heat on medium for about a minute. Pour egg mixture into pan, and cook until eggs begin to set on bottom. You will be able to ease the eggs up with a spatula.3. Spread filling over half of omelet, leaving a 1/2-inch border, and reserving 1 tablespoon of filling for a garnish. Lift up omelet and fold in half, slightly off-center so filling peeks out. Cook 2 minutes. 4. Slide omelet onto plate & garnish with remaining filling. ENJOY!

There are so many wonderful ideas on Pinterest...It's addicting!I've decided to start something called,
"Pinned It, Tried It, Loved It!" This is where I'll try out some of the ideas that I find on Pinterest & blog about the ones that I love.
Today I'm going to share with you an easy & wonderful idea that I have tried & LOVED!A scooter stand...
My kids' scooters would never stay up!
They were always tipped over on the floor in the garage.
Then I found this great Pin that was only a picture & my husband built us one. It works great & solved the problem of scooters laying all over the garage.
It took me a while to find the "original" source, but I finally found it! The picture that I had pinned was from the blog,"Batchelors Way".You can find a complete tutorial on the blog HERE.

Decisions...What Color Should I Paint My House?
To contact us Click HERE
We are going to be having the exterior of our house painted next month.
A few years ago we painted the trim & added shutters, but now the stucco on the main portion of the house has some cracking, especially on the back of the house & could use some freshening up. I'm so excited, but also so confused... I don't know what color to pick! We have been driving around looking at different houses & I've been searching the internet for ideas.
When we first moved into our home, this is what it looked like...
This is what it looks like now...
It's amazing what painting the trim did!
You can see all the changes we've made HERE.
I definitely want to keep the black shutters, but I can't decide if I want grey & white or a tan & white color.
Here are a few of my inspiration photos...
I LOVE the color, hardie board & the porch on this one!

Here is more of a grey color with the black door...love the porch too!

Here is a brown color, with white trim & the black shutters.

This is kind of a mix of tan & grey...

What do you think would look best?I keep changing my mind...I'm not sure which would look best with our red brick.

Front Door Love...
To contact us Click HERE
We will also be getting our front door painted with the rest of our house. I've always had a white door & can't decide if I dare try something new.
Here are a few of my inspirations from Pinterest...
sourceI love the color, hardware, & numbers on this door...so cute!
sourceThis one is so bright & fresh, but I love the molding around it the most!
sourceI also LOVE the molding around this door.I will probably be painting my door black. If I don't like it...I guess I can always paint it again! The problem I'm having now is that if I don't like my house it's a little harder to fix.I've had the hardest time picking out paint colors! I hope the one we picked isn't too dark...it's so hard to tell what it will look like on the house.
Here are a few of my inspirations from Pinterest...

Painting Nightmare...
To contact us Click HERE
My last post was on front door love...Unfortunately, We've encountered a front door NIGHTMARE!!
This is why we usually just do things ourselves...Don't you hate it when hire someone to do a project to eliminate the headache of doing it yourself, but then you are left with a much larger problem?
I know every time we start a project there is a good chance of a few problems, but the painters we hired were so MESSY!
It's kind of a nightmare! They will be back to fix quite a few of the problems, but just to give you an idea of what we are dealing with: They ruined both doors, paint is all over the porch, on my door hardware, on my deck (that I had already stained for the summer), on our light fixtures, they put all of their equipment on our outdoor furniture & cracked the tiles in the table & the list goes on & on...
The paint job itself looks great from the road, it's just a few of the little things that seem to add up to quite a lot when it comes to fixing them!
Here is my house...Before
After
Not exactly the after I'd hoped for :(I'll keep you posted & hope this painting nightmare will soon end!

Cleaning Out The Junk...
To contact us Click HERE
How can it already be July?? We've been so busy lately that I haven't blogged for a while!
Can you believe it's almost been a month since they started painting our house & it's still not done! My last post showed you what they did to the door. They tried for 2 days to fix it, but it still didn't work.It is driving me crazy....so to deal with my anxiety we have been working on cleaning the inside of our house. We have a few areas that constantly collect...JUNK! That would be closets, the basement & our garage. We have conquered 2 out of the 3 this week.We did the kids' closets & the basement . I am proud of my kids...they were so good to get rid of things they don't use anymore! We filled the WHOLE car full of donation items...there wasn't any space left for passengers!
We started out by emptying the entire closet & separated the stuff into 3 piles: -Garbage -Donation-KeepThen we organize the "keep" pile where we want it to go.It's a MESSY process, but it feels so refreshing when you are done!
This is from my 10 year old's room....
There was so much junk it started overflowing into the hallway...
We actually filled 2 bags of just garbage!
It always amazes me how much STUFF can fit in a small space!
We decided to really clean & move her whole room around...this always makes it feel really fresh when you are done! The way we arranged it actually makes it feel more spacious.
My daughter actually has a great sized closet, so we change it into a reading/music/clothing room.
She LOVES it & so does her little sister...can't keep her out of there!
We pulled all of her American Girl posters & toys out. You can see the before HERE. Then we put her chair & bookcase in there. Her clothing hangs on the other side of the closet.
Next, we decided to hang her own artwork & will be displaying more of her art on the wall...she was excited about that!
We just moved her bed, dresser & vanity around. Then we took her "name" letters from above the window & put them going down the wall. It's amazing how just moving around the stuff you already have makes it feel like a new room!
It feels so good to get rid of JUNK!At least this frustrating painting process motivated me to clean out some of our problem areas!I hope the painter's finish up this week & I can post pictures soon! They have repainted my deck, the back door & they've removed the paint off of the brick & lights...which I'm thankful for. We did have to order a new door & hardware & have decided not to let them paint it. I can't wait to have our house back so we can enjoy the rest of our summer!!

Interview with a Student, Father, Husband, Full-Time Employee and Army Veteran

Image via WikipediaI recently got to interview Jameson Owens, a non-traditional student via email to get a better perspective on the challenges, sacrifices and hurdles of everyday living. After reading this Blog, you will appreciate your own college experience a little better. Jameson attends Murray State University in Murray, KY.
Please give a brief personal history: I spent just over 10 years in the Army. I had it good. I was financially stable with a great and supportive wife and 5 kids. I got to travel all over the world. I was completely unprepared for the outside world when I finally got out, especially the way things are today. So after about 2 years of working at a cable company and driving a bus for the city, I felt it was time to go back and finish up what I started so many years ago. I took advantage of the GI Bill to obtain my degree in Occupational Health and Safety. With the stress of attending full time, I still have responsibilities at home. I still had to support my family. So working part time for peanuts driving a bus was getting harder to do due to my academic schedule so I began to look for a 3rd shift position. I now work nights as a security guard full time.
How long will it take to complete your degree? It will take about another 3 semesters plus a summer of internship to completely finish up. When did you start? I have been working on getting my college education off and on since 1994. I took a long pause from about 1996 or so to do the “young and dumb” thing and then the Army. I took a few classes while I was in, but as busy as Army lifestyle can be, I took another break. It wasn’t until Fall of 2009 that I enrolled in Murray State to finish it up.
By having the responsibilities of providing for a family while in college, what obstacles have you encountered? Some of the main obstacles would include being able to handle things at home. I really like my yard to be nice. It has suffered. I still get out there to mow when it’s needed, but there are other landscaping things I want to do that have been put on hold. Another thing is house and vehicle maintenance. I do the things when I have the time. Thankfully, my family has stepped up to help a lot. Another obstacle would include being available to take the kids to extra curricular activities. I usually can get to a football game or soccer game while it’s in progress but getting there on time is rare these days.
What sacrifices have you made? Aside from missing or being late to sports, probably one of the biggest sacrifices is being able to spend the quality time with my wife and kids. Sleep is a big sacrifice as well as trying to stay in shape. With a family, it’s not just me that makes the sacrifices. My wife works full time as well. It’s not too bad while the kids are in school, but during breaks, my kids are burdened as well. My two oldest have taken a giant step up to help care for their younger siblings. They have managed to get around some of those obstacles as mentioned in the previous question.
If you learned just one thing that you would like to pass on to others that will face a similar journey, what would you tell them?Get that college education as early as you can. If you wait as long as I did, it will be harder to do everyday. Even if you have a good job without your degree, you should take the time to get it. That job may not be guaranteed for life. Looking back since starting college, what would you have done differently? If I had to go back and do it again, I would have at least tried to finish my degree as soon as possible after high school.
What advice do you have for young parents in college to stretch their budget? I used to live out in the county when I started back to school. Driving back and forth 4-5 times a day with today’s gas prices is crazy. If you can, move into town as close as possible to your school. It doesn’t have to be permanent, just until you finish school. I now live across the street from mine so I walk to class. Not only does it save money in gas, it helps you somewhat stay in shape if you don’t get the chance to exercise. On top of that, I live less than 5 miles from my job. I could ride a bike to work if I wanted. 2nd, it is not necessary to have the best things in life, 55 inch flat screen TV, 3 or 4 game systems, etc. There isn’t really a big need to buy brand name groceries all the time. The Walmart or Kroger brands are cheaper (sometimes) and sometimes the same as quality and taste. Some things I think taste better. Of course that is a personal preference. Pasta is cheap. Also, with the size family that I have, we tend to do a lot of crock pot meals. There are so many different ways to stretch a budget. I had to learn that the hard way.
Thanks Jameson and good luck finishing your degree.

Stacy Giltner Luck has it that there is one packet of ramen that the equally starving roomie (aka lump on couch) has not spotted. Flavor appears to be red with a picture of a sturdy cow. For the non-finicky palate of the starving college student this just means a cow can eat it, so can this student. Preparing ramen is a tricky ordeal as the kitchen is scanned for a clean pot, a bowl, and possibly a spork. The flies lead the starving college student’s eyes to the pile of dishes that have been abandoned ages ago in what use to be a sink buried under fuzz and debris. Cooking the precious package of ramen has now been ruled out. This clever student brainstorms the next plan – sifting through old Taco Bell bags scattered around the living room. The first bag of many is an immediate gold mine of hot and mild sauce packets. The ramen package is busted open and the taco bell bag becomes a serving platter for this delectable treat. The hard ramen is first dipped into the red sauce and then dipped into the seasoning. This crunchy little treat must be enjoyed quickly before the roomie awakes and sucker punches the student for not sharing this morsel.

Wilmalynne Botley With boiling ramen noodles add an egg mix egg while in soup to separate egg then add sauce mix lawrys garlic salt and ground black pepper about 1 tsp of each. And it's perfect.
Alycia Drube Be careful to only use the amount of water as you want broth. While noodles are boiling add in an egg (egg drop soup style). If noodles aren't done boil it down a little, thicker is better. Then add packet of flavoring and a couple squirts of Sriracha sauce. It smells funny but tastes DELICIOUS!
Faith Jordan My mom makes this amazing salad but I have no idea where she got the recipe from. The salad part is just romaine lettuce and chopped green onions, the salad dressing is just 1/2 cup oil, 4 tbsp vinegar, one packet of the seasoning from ramen noodles mixed together. The topping is toast almond slivers in a skillet with seasme seeds, after add two packs of the crumbled ramen noodles (uncooked). mix it all together when you are ready to serve so the noodles wont get soggy from the dressing.
